What Can Feng Shui and the Yijing Actually Predict?

Translator's note. A short, practical list from 2017: what a client can actually bring to a reader. The opening image — prediction as a road sign, not a steering wheel — is the clearest statement in this collection of how the author thinks prediction should be used, and it is worth reading before the list. The heading says “feng shui and the Yijing,” but the scope is the whole predictive toolkit, with the technique appropriate to each item.

The purpose of prediction is to avoid risk. A prediction is exactly like the signs on a motorway: it warns you. If you do not believe the sign and keep accelerating, then the prediction was pointless.

To get any benefit from a reading you have to hold the result correctly. When the reading is bad, be doubly careful in everything, and withdraw when it is time to withdraw — do not linger. When the reading is good, press forward with everything you have and enlarge the gain — but do not lose your head.

Here is what can be read.

  1. A person's lifetime prospects in official career, in wealth, in marriage, and in illness and injury. Also the choosing and changing of names.
  1. Whether a business partner — or a subordinate — is loyal to you.
  1. The true relationship between you and each of your superiors.
  1. How a marriage or relationship will arise, develop, change, and end.
  1. Whether a journey on business will be safe, and whether the business will go smoothly.
  1. Whether a loan will be granted, or a debt collected — and when.
  1. When a promotion or transfer will come.
  1. Whether an examination, a place at a school, or a professional title will be obtained.
  1. Whether an investment will make money.
  1. Whether a business will succeed, and whether it will profit.
  1. Whether a new product has a market, and in which direction the market is best developed.
  1. The prospects of an organisation, and the choosing of its name.
  1. A person's or an organisation's fortune for a given year, or for several years.
  1. Before conception, choosing the living environment for the pregnancy, so as to secure a good fate for the child.
  1. From the feng shui of the ancestral graves, an accurate reading of the fate grade and annual fortune of every descendant — wealth or poverty, rank or lowliness, fortune or misfortune, long life or early death.
  1. From the feng shui of a dwelling, an accurate reading of the fate and annual fortune of every person living in it.
  1. From the layout of a company's or institution's buildings — especially the position of the principal leaders and the finance office within the whole — an accurate reading of every aspect of the organisation's condition, including the condition of its leaders.
  1. Selecting the site of an ancestral grave or a house, and designing the layout on feng shui principles, so as to take the favourable and avoid the harmful — for oneself and for one's descendants.
  1. Choosing auspicious dates for laying a foundation stone, opening a business, a celebration, a wedding, or a move.
  1. The direction in which an illness will develop.
  1. Through remedies that satisfy the criteria of being materialist, dialectical, objective and realistic, changing one's fortune substantially on many fronts.
  1. In truth, feng shui and the Yijing arts, once mastered, can be asked about anything concerning how a person or an event arises, develops, changes and ends. The twenty-one items above are only part of the range.

There are many methods. Whichever one is used, if it satisfies the criteria of being materialist, dialectical, objective and realistic, it is of benefit to the person asking. But do not be taken in by a master's patter and hand over large sums. There is nothing wrong with charging a fee for a consultation. What deserves suspicion is the setup: one demand for money after another, in a chain.
