Why Fate Can Be Predicted
Translator's note. The philosophical foundation, written in 1998 and revised since: if matter moves by law, and a person is matter, then a life moves by law, and a life can therefore be predicted. What follows is the argument for why time alone is not enough — two watermelon seeds planted in the same hour, one in a greenhouse and one outside — and the most specific claim in the corpus about twins: same grave, same house, different birth order, different inherited information, therefore different reception of the same feng shui field.

Dialectical materialism holds that the movement and change of matter follow laws. A person is matter; therefore the development and movement of a human life follows laws. The law of that development and movement is what we call a person's fate. So a fate follows laws. And if it follows laws, it can be predicted.
But whether a fate can actually be predicted depends on the crucial question of whether the law of a human life's movement can be found. Find it, and we can predict. At this point you may ask: you have argued at length — have you found it? Yes. Using the models our ancestors invented — the trigrams and lines, the bazi, and feng shui, built out of yin-yang, the five phases, the stems and branches — and joining them to our own analysis and summary of the fate facts of tens of thousands of people using modern methods, we have deciphered the relation between those models and a human fate. Extensive testing has proved that a fate can be predicted, and predicted accurately. For a given person, setting aside the occasional error of the reader, a qualitative prediction — whether money will be lost or made, whether there will be promotion or demotion — can be made a hundred per cent. As for quantitative prediction — how much lost, how much made, how far the scope of authority expanded, how many ranks were climbed — accuracy falls off sharply.

As to the traditional arts of the trigrams and lines, the bazi and feng shui (the home environment and the ancestral grave), extensive practice has established: to predict a single event, the trigrams and lines are the fastest and most accurate; to predict the wealth, rank, fortune and lifespan of a whole life, or the luck of a given year, the best is a perfect combination of bazi and feng shui. Only so can one be accurate without error, and only so can one help people move toward the auspicious and away from the inauspicious.
Why? Marxist dialectics holds that the universe is the combination of time and space, and that every thing in the world is composed of those two factors. A person living on earth has both a temporal and a spatial nature. Attend only to the factor of time and ignore the factor of space — environment — and predict from birth time alone, and your prediction has only temporal characteristics: the result can say only that such-and-such a fact should appear at such-and-such a time, but not whether it will in fact appear.
An analogy. In winter, at the same moment, a farmer plants two watermelon seeds, one inside a greenhouse and one outside. Predicting by time alone, we could conclude with confidence that in a hundred-odd days both will bear large watermelons. In fact the seed outside will not even sprout, let alone bear fruit. From which it is clear that prediction from the bazi alone, a mere time factor, is unscientific and of limited accuracy. Accurate prediction requires the factor of space — the home environment and the ancestral grave.
Predict without environmental feng shui and it would follow that everyone born in the same year, month, day and hour has the same fate; and that twins and triplets of the same sex born in the same hour have fates even more certainly identical. But the fact is that even same-sex twins born in the same hour have different fates, sometimes enormously different. One twin dies young and the other grows up; one rises in office and makes money and the other is poor and dull; one lives at peace and the other in turmoil; one marries and has children and the other lives alone. Such facts are everywhere. Which shows plainly: a fate can be predicted, but the method of prediction is decisive. Only by fusing the trigrams and lines, the bazi and environmental feng shui into one can prediction be accurate without error.

Why do same-sex twins born in the same hour have different fates?
We have said that people born in the same year, month, day and hour differ chiefly because of environmental feng shui — home and ancestral grave. But then, you may ask, do twins not share the same home and the same grave? Why still a great difference?
Because their birth order differs. And because their birth order differs, the hereditary information they received from their parents differs. That difference in inherited information decides that they receive the qi-field information — the feng shui information — of the home and the grave differently. And that difference in reception decides that same-sex twins born in the same hour have different fates.

In any home or any grave site, different terrain and different arrangements of things inside and outside produce different information-energy fields: the distribution of magnetic strength, the distribution of sound, light, wind, frost, rain and snow. These different fields — this feng shui — affect a person's wealth, rank, fortune and lifespan. And the same field affects the people living in it differently.
In daily life, if we put several goldfish hatched in the same hour into the same tank, in time they will plainly show different fate characteristics. As for environmental feng shui, the configurations formed by different terrains affect people differently: some configurations make the eldest son an official and rich; some make the second or third son so; some make all three; some make the eldest son childless, some the second or third; some make the eldest die young, some the second or third; some make the eldest have only sons and no daughters, some make the second and third have only daughters. And so on, endlessly. For same-sex twins born in the same hour there is the distinction of first, second or third birth; and against one and the same environmental feng shui, that produces a difference in fate.
From which it is clear that bazi alone, without environmental feng shui, gives only limited accuracy. And it follows that people of the same sex born in the same year, month, day and hour, if their birth order is the same and the configuration of their environmental feng shui broadly similar (though the strength of the information-energy field need not be), will have broadly the same fate: if one of them is promoted in 1998, all of them will be promoted that year — but how great the promotion is, is decided entirely by the strength of the field formed by each one's own environmental feng shui.
