Is There Such a Thing as Reverse Feng Shui?
Translator's note. A strange doctrine, and a real one: some practitioners hold that a brothel, casino or prison has “reverse” feng shui, and must therefore be read backwards — good becomes bad, bad becomes good. The refutation here is a single analogy, and it is decisive. The original ends with a contact number for consultations; it has been removed.
The claim is made often enough to have become a school: premises of certain kinds — nightclubs, casinos, prisons — have feng shui that runs in reverse, and must be read in reverse. An auspicious direction in such a building is said to produce the opposite of what it would produce anywhere else. It sounds like sophistication. It is a way of accounting for failures in ordinary readings.
The prison test
Take the claim at face value and ask who is affected.
A prison contains two populations: the inmates and the guards. They occupy the same building, the same cells, the same exercise yards, the same corridors. If the building's feng shui runs backwards, then it runs backwards for both.
The consequence is unavoidable. If the site is genuinely inverted, then the staff — who spend their working lives in it — should suffer the same shortened lives and the same injuries as the prisoners. There is no mechanism by which a reversed energy distinguishes between a person in a uniform and a person in a cell.
Is that observed? Prisons are grim places, and their staff do carry occupational stress. But the claim being made is not about stress. It is that the same building delivers opposite verdicts depending on the occupant's legal status. Nothing in the physical description of the site could produce such a split.
If a prison's feng shui must nonetheless be good for the people who live and work in it — and it must, or the doctrine of the site doing anything at all collapses — then it is governed by the same rules as a house.
The casino's own interests
A casino exists to take money. That is its function, and it is not a moral question here; it is a description of the business.
Now consider what a badly-sited casino actually experiences. Fire. Flood. Armed robbery. Customers who fight inside it and shoot at each other. These are not symbolic harms. They are the standard failure modes of a cash-heavy venue, and they are exactly what an inauspicious site is said to produce.
So a casino with bad feng shui does not become a casino where bad luck is good. It becomes a casino that burns down. The building does not know what business is conducted inside it, and it does not reverse its behaviour when it finds out.
Energy does not read the sign above the door
The underlying point is simple enough to state without any technical vocabulary.
Energy is a physical quantity. It does not change its nature according to the purpose of the building it passes through. It acts on living things — plants, animals, people — by the same rules in every case. It does not become a sword when it reaches an animal, or gold when it reaches a person.
Nor does it have intentions. A thing without intentions cannot decide to behave in reverse because the premises are used for gambling. Water runs downhill; it does not run uphill when it arrives at a nightclub. If a practitioner tells you that water reverses at a casino, ask him what the water is doing at the casino's residential floors, or in the flat next door, or in the drains beneath the car park.
What is actually being described
The reverse-feng-shui doctrine exists to solve a problem the practitioner has, not a problem the building has. When the theory predicts prosperity for a site that then fails, there are three honest responses: the theory is wrong, the reading was wrong, or the site changed. The reverse doctrine offers a fourth: the site is a special case where the theory inverts.
That fourth option costs nothing and explains everything, which is the signature of a device rather than a finding.
The rule that replaces it
Read the site. Do not read the business.
A site that produces wealth will produce wealth in a casino, a restaurant, or a warehouse. A site that produces loss will produce loss in any of them — including, as the original puts it bluntly, a brothel. The trade does not modify the physics. If it did, the reading would no longer be a reading of the site at all, but a reading of the customer's industry, and there would be no reason to visit the building.
